Content
The Japanese Commercial shows several scenes with not relation to each other, in which the only
sound comes from a slow upbeat pop song. Every scene shows people who are at
first unsettled and / or dissatisfied with their current situation, until the
prospect of greasy fast food chicken finally gives their lives some meaning
again. A kid who lags behind at diving training becomes happy when he gets to
eat KFC afterwards with his friends. Some people in an office seem to have a
stressed out time, but when a senior worker comes in with bags full of KFC
products, he lightens up everyone's day (literally, before he comes in, they
are working without light). While eating, all of them are standing in a circle,
bowing to each other. The last scene shows a little girl who doesn't want to
come out from under a table. Regardless of what her serious grade schooler problems
may have been, when the father arrives with a bag of KFC, all is forgotten and
everything is better, as they are then seen lying under the table together as a
family, happily chatting away.
The KFC brand logo and website URL are seen in the first few seconds in
corners of the screen. After every scene and at the end of the video, writing gives each scene - and the spot in general - a little motivational message about working hard and being happy.
Website
The Japanese KFC Website stretches a lot more vertically. The top
features standard points like the menu as well as a "fan" page for
social media participation, a "new concept" page that links to
several different KFC related pages and even a page that features a strange
mascot called "Ponta" which seems to be in some way related to the
coupon system in Japanese KFC Stores. Below these menu points, a massive amount
of information is clustered together. The colors are plentiful and popular
anime characters are utilized to market the product. Unlike in the Korean
website, social media information is also put in the center of the main page,
taking a big part of the screen instead of being disposed into a corner. For
some reason, all the menus from the top of the page are once again lined up at
the bottom, with every sub menu point laid out, before standard official
information concludes the page.
The sub menus themselves offer the opportunity to dig deep into massive
amounts of information, even about the history of the company itself.
The sheer amount of images, writing, colours and links prevent fluent navigation though. Commercials are also available and hosted on youtube, though there are only
three relatively recent ones at the point of writing this. The main site also
sports a video player with some commercials, though this features only purpose
seems to be to utterly annoy the viewer. The video constantly restarts itself
with newly turned on audio, even when another point is selected, audio was
manually muted, or another browser tab is used. Additionally, if there is any
mention of corporate responsibility to be found on the Japanese site, it was
simply beyond my ability to wade through the confusing until I could find it.
